Dana Crash: Two families fight over corpse
The aftermath of Dana crash still lingers as fight broke out yesterday between two families at Lekan Ogunsola mortuary of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital LASUTH, Ikeja, due to the inability of both families to recognise the remains of their loved one.
Trouble started when the family of late Mr. Jones Ifeakanwa, who died in the crash, were told that another family have identified same corpse as their own.The second family after going in to identify their corpse eventually picked same corpse as their late brother who was also involved in the crash.
Chief Medical Examiner, LASUTH and Consultant Pathologist and Forensic medicine, Prof. John Obafunwa explained that the issue arose due to the fact that the bodies have really degenerated, thereby making it almost impossible to be recognised.
When the argument became too heated, Obafunwa refused giving out the body to either family stating that they will have to conduct DNA test to ascertain necessary details. But the interesting thing is that it was discovered that the hospital have been giving out bodies to families without following proper procedure of identification as about six bodies have already been given out by the hospital.
I just can't help but wonder if this would have been one of many case of unrecovered body from the crash.
