First approved HIV prevention drug

On Monday July 16, 2012 United States regulators approved 'Truvada' as the first ever HIV prevention drug which is to be used on uninfected adults who are at risk of contacting the deadly disease.

The drug 'Truvada' made by Gilead Sciences in California, has been available since 2004, but just get recently approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to be used as a tool to ward off HIV in healthy people. The pill as pre-exposure prophylaxis, has been hailed by some AIDS experts as a potent new tool against the dreaded disease.

However, FDA encourage adults to use 'Truvada' as part of a comprehensive HIV prevention strategy that includes other prevention methods such as: safe sex practice, risk reduction counseling, and regular   HIV testing.
